Suspected grenade found

Discovery clears Atlanta Highway business

POSTED: April 9, 2012 5:27 p.m.

An Atlanta Highway business was evacuated for a short time Monday after a suspected grenade was reportedly found in an ammunition canister inside the building.

According to authorities, an employee of Quality Self Storage made the discovery about 3 p.m.

The owner of the business told Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies that the container was underneath a pile of trash. The owner brought it outside and called 911.

Firefighters evacuated the business, but did not close Atlanta Highway.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Chad Latonis said the suspected grenade, which was painted blue, “appears to be an inert training device.”

“But we’re not sure of the origin … so we have to treat it as live until we know otherwise” Latonis said.
