State Sen. Jack Murphy of Cumming recently met with six local high school students who received the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship.

The students included Victoria Glass of Forsyth Central, Taylor Wingard of North Forsyth and Shane Lyons of South Forsyth, as well as Lauren Steves of Cherokee, Joseph Hulen of Creekview and Ana Bravo of Woodstock.

Murphy, a Republican, represents District 27, which includes portions of Forsyth and Cherokee counties.

In a statement, he described the scholarships as “a true testament to the four years of hard work [the students] displayed throughout their high school careers.”

“It is an honor to serve in a district where our students excel inside and outside of the classroom,” Murphy said. “I am certain they will continue their hard work throughout college on the journey to becoming tomorrow’s leaders in Georgia.”

To recognize their achievements, the six students were also invited to attend an Atlanta Braves game. They were acknowledged with a short presentation and then allowed to take photos throughout Turner Field with Murphy.

According to a news release, the Comcast scholarship program recognizes students who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service, serve as models for their fellow students and display leadership abilities in school activities or through work experience.

Award recipients receive a one-time grant of $1,000 to be used toward their further education.
