State Rep. Mark Hamilton of Cumming has been appointed to chair the Jekyll Island-State Park Authority Oversight Committee.

Hamilton, a Republican who represents District 23, said in a statement that he was honored fellow Republican and House Speaker David Ralston had chosen him.

“I look forward to working with the committee members and the Jekyll Island Authority to continue to make improvements to this jewel of our state as it provides unique economic development opportunities for Georgia,” he said.

Hamilton was tapped by Ralston last year to serve on the committee, which is responsible for reviewing the authority’s annual financial position and ensuring its duties and functions are accomplished in accordance with state law.

The committee is made up of three members of the state House of Representatives, selected by the speaker, and three members of the state Senate, chosen by the Senate president.

In addition, the speaker of the House appoints a member who will serve as vice chairman in odd numbered years and as chairman in even-numbered years.

The members of the committee serve two-year terms concurrent with their terms in the General Assembly.

“Speaker Ralston appointed me chairman of the very busy Governmental Affairs committee after only three years as a legislator,” Hamilton said. “I assume he continues to place trust in me and my leadership abilities and that is why he has now appointed me chairman of this oversight committee.

“It will mean getting more involved in the details of the authority and the trust that has been placed in them during this important revitalization project.”
