The next District 5 Forsyth County commissioner will be decided Tuesday, unlike the ballot’s other commission races, which could go to a runoff.

With just two Republican candidates seeking the position, the majority of votes in the eastern Forsyth district will belong to incumbent Jim Boff or challenger John Derucki.

The other districts have three and five Republicans on the ballots. No Democrats qualified for any of the contests this year.

Boff, who has served one term on the commission, was elected chairman by his fellow commissioners at the start of the year.

He said his 19 years as a county resident and his community volunteerism also qualify him for the job.

“I’m running for re-election because I care about the county and how it continues to grow,” he said.

Derucki said his decision to run is “all about vision and leadership.”

Being a small business owner has given him perspective on efficiency, production and service, he said, which translate to the commissioner position.

If elected, Derucki said one of his top priorities is “to be part of a local government that works together for the benefit of all the county residents.”

He also plans to focus on “quality economic development and job growth that broadens our tax base.”

Boff said he will continue to consider how decisions affect homeowners.

“I plan on keeping taxes low and to hopefully pay off debt and keep the government effective and efficient,” he said.

He would like voters to remember that he supports open government and has the time to devote to the job because he’s retired.

Derucki said he’d like Distrct 5 to keep in mind what they’ve seen from him.

“I ran a campaign that was honest, based on integrity and I didn’t give in to dirty politics,” he said.

Due to a change in the local law in 2009, the commission post will be elected by district only for the first time. The position was decided countywide in 2008.
