A few days into the new school year, Forsyth County commissioners have approved a parking agreement for students at the Old Atlanta Recreation Center.

The county facility is across Nichols Road from Lambert High School, which has a waiting list for its full student parking lot.

The commission on Thursday voted 4-1, with Jim Boff opposed, to approve a county agreement making 50 spaces available for students on school days at a cost of $300 for the year.

Commissioners approved a version of the agreement in late July in which the school system would have rented out the spaces and patrolled the parking on the county property. The going rate in that draft was $125.

County Attorney Ken Jarrard said Thursday that the local board of education did not want to be involved in the agreement, so he drafted a contract that the county can sign with students and their guardians.

Each space would be assigned to a student and the county would be held harmless from any claims, Jarrard said.

The agreement will first go to the parks and recreation board for review before it’s finalized, he said.

The county manager would likely delegate how to patrol the parking and the parks and recreation department could handle registration.

Commissioner Brian Tam, whose district includes Lambert and the center, asked that county staff contact the school to first open up the parking spots to students on the wait list.

Students parking on Lambert’s campus pay $110 for one year, and seniors and juniors receive priority.
