Four Midway Elementary School students were taken to Northside Hospital-Forsyth as a precaution Thursday afternoon after their school bus was rear-ended by a pickup truck in south Forsyth.

“We’re taking extreme caution with their safety,” said Jennifer Caracciolo, spokeswoman for Forsyth County Schools.

She added that a second bus was taking the remaining students home and staff members helped with the transfer process.

The incident happened about 4:15 p.m. on Strickland Road just off Hwy. 9 as students were being taken home from school. Caracciolo said the bus was full.

Karleen Chalker with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s office said three medical units were sent to the scene after students riding in the back of the bus were “complaining of neck and back injuries.”

Forsyth County Fire Lt. Debbie Lindstrom said the students were taken “a hospital to be checked out.”

The driver of the truck, 50-year-old Kennith Drake of Alpharetta, was not injured in the incident, authorities said.

He was, however, arrested on several charges, including driving under the influence and following too closely.

Drake also was charged with two counts of open container. According to the sheriff’s office, he remains in custody at the Forsyth County Detention Center. Bond has been set at $2,970.

According to Caracciolo, parents of the students were notified about what had happened and a school administrator went to the hospital.
