Fundraiser to 'lock up' MDA support

Annual event today at Cumming eatery

POSTED: August 28, 2012 6:00 a.m.

Several “jailbirds” will be locked up for doing something good Tuesday as the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s holds its Cumming Executive Lock-Up.

The event is set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Outback Steakhouse on Market Place Boulevard in Cumming.

Local residents were nominated to be put behind bars as a way to raise money for the organization. For the past few months, they’ve been working to raise “bail money,” which will be donated to the association.

Leslie Cash, a representative of MDA, said the event has been held in Cumming for at least five years.

“It’s been very successful,” she said. “Last year, we raised $44,000 and this year our goal is $54,000.

“We have 130 people who have been recruited as jailbirds.”

Cash said the event will use help from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Alpharetta Police Department.

“They’ll go pick up the jailbirds,” she said, noting that people always have fun with the event.

“I have one who said they’re dressing in an actual jailbird outfit. They want to have their picture taken with their cop and we take their mug shot behind a little jail we have, and they make calls pleading with people to come and get them out of jail.”

After spending an hour in what Cash called “our glamorous jail,” they’ll be returned to their respective business via limousine.

“It’s all very light hearted, but obviously we’re doing something for an awesome cause,” she said.

Cash added that all funds raised at Tuesday’s event will go to local people in need of various MDA programs, such as a summer camp for children with the disease, wheelchair repairs, clinics and support groups.

“All the money raised at the Cumming lock-up stays in the Forsyth County area,” she said, noting that anyone is welcome to stop and made a donation.

“We love it when people come to actually hand in their money to help bail people out.”
