The city of Alpharetta is considering donating about 36 acres of unbuildable land to Forsyth County.

The wetlands tract by the Forsyth County Big Creek Greenway was given to Alpharetta in 1995 as a gift by the developer of the adjacent Shiloh Creek subdivision, said Mike Perry, the city’s director of parks and recreation.

More than 90 percent of the property, which is near Shiloh and Union Hill roads, is in the floodplain or wetlands, Perry said.

He thought the reason for the original donation was for a possible site for an environmental education center or a way for the developer to receive impact or wetland credits.

“Somebody came to the city with free land, and it had some potential purposes,” he said.

“To my knowledge, none of that has taken place since then, so it was kind of out of sight, out of mind.”

The city’s ownership of the property in Forsyth County recently surfaced, Perry said, likely due to a tree that encroached on the greenway.

With no foreseeable use for the property, he said Alpharetta began exploring options to sell, donate or bid the land it doesn’t need.

The property hasn’t been taxed, since it has no market value, but Perry said it also has no “usable value” to the city.

“It’s a liability that doesn’t produce any benefit to our constituents,” he said.

Alpharetta officials do not have a timeline to determine what to do with the site.

Forsyth Commissioner Todd Levent, in whose district the site lies, said the county is “absolutely considering accepting it as a donation.”

The property likely would become part of the land included in the county’s park system, he said.
