Ex-comptroller indicted in theft case

Accused of taking $130K from firm

POSTED: September 15, 2012 12:31 a.m.

A Forsyth County woman accused of taking at least $130,000 from her former employer has been indicted by the grand jury on six counts of felony theft.

Karalee Sciukas, 60, turned herself in at the jail in March 2011 after the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office charged her with felony theft by taking.

Authorities said it appeared Sciukas had been gradually taking money from Engineered Architectural Systems off McFarland Parkway while she worked there.

She was employed as the comptroller from 2004-10.

The business brought the theft to the agency’s attention when another employee noticed the money missing from the books, of which Sciukas had sole control.

Each of the six counts levied by the grand jury this week is for a theft of more than $500 during a quarter of a year, starting with the fourth quarter of 2008 and running consecutively until she left the business.

Investigators have said Scuikas wrote herself checks and paid her personal credit card bills with the company’s money.
