Nearly 450 flu vaccinations were given Wednesday during an immunization event organized by the Forsyth County school system and the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Connie Trent, health services coordinator for the school district, said about the same number of students received the injectable vaccination, 219, as those who received it in mist form during the event at Cumming Elementary.

“We were pleased with the turnout for the no-cost flu vaccines, provided by the Forsyth County Health Department,” Trent said.

“The convenience of holding it on an early release day allowed us to provide an extra defense against the flu for our school-age children.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, September is when flu vaccinations should begin, though they can continue through flu season, which can last as late as May.

Flu season begins as early as October and activity typically peaks in January or February.

The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get a vaccine annually. That also includes adults.

Organizers of the clinic Wednesday had said the goal was to decrease student illness, which can reduce missed school days for students and missed work days for their parents.

The Forsyth County Health Department offers the flu shot for all ages, and officials have said no shortage of vaccine is expected this year.

The department is offering the shots on a walk-in basis weekly during regular business hours. The cost is $25.
