Fair days a special time in Cumming

POSTED: September 30, 2012 8:00 a.m.

Now that Autumn has made its presence known with dropping temperatures, cool breezes and the first flashes of color from turning leaves, it’s time for the Cumming Country Fair & Festival to roll into town to make the season official.

The local fair, which starts Thursday, epitomizes all that is good about fall in North Georgia.

We have used this space before to recognize the foresight shown by Cumming officials years ago in building a permanent fairgrounds that is the envy of communities across the country.

We suspect, however, that not even those responsible could have imagined what a huge success the venue and the annual fair it hosts would turn out to be.

While each year’s fair offers a fantastic opportunity for affordable entertainment and family fun, the fair’s greatest value is perhaps the fact that it serves as an event the entire community can embrace and in which we can all take pride.

Visitors from throughout the region travel to Cumming each October to enjoy the fair, and we certainly appreciate the economic gain that comes from their patronizing local businesses while they are here.

Thanks to the incredible effort that goes into making the fair a safe and comfortable event for all those in attendance, we also can take pride in the fact that those same visitors are likely to go home with a positive image of Cumming and Forsyth County, which is good for us all.

But beyond the economic impact and the good publicity, fair time in Cumming is just fun.

The sounds, the smells, the atmosphere around town all combine for a special 10 days unlike any others during the year.

It’s a great time of the year to be in Cumming. The fun starts Thursday and continues through Oct. 14.

If you’ve been before you will want to come again, and if not, this should be the year to start a new tradition.
