No taxes on some products this weekend

POSTED: October 2, 2012 12:30 a.m.

Water- and energy-saving products will be exempt from state and local sales taxes next weekend.

The sales tax holiday on WaterSense- and ENERGY STAR- labeled products will run from Friday to Sunday.

The exemption includes any products for personal use with a purchase of less than $1,500.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy that encourages the use of energy-efficient products and practices to save money and protect the environment.

Tax-exempt products include: air conditioners, ceiling fans, washers, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, doors, fluorescent light bulbs, programmable thermostats, refrigerators and windows.

WaterSense, a partnership program by the EPA, seeks to protect the future of our nation's water supply by offering people a way to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes and services.

Water-saving products that will be tax-exempt include: bathroom sink faucets, faucet accessories, high-efficiency toilets, showerheads and weather- or sensor-based irrigation controllers.

WaterSense-labeled products use at least 20 percent less water, and perform as well as or better than conventional models.

Independent, third parties certify that WaterSense-labeled products meet EPA criteria for water efficiency.

Replacing a standard showerhead with a WaterSense-labeled one can save thousands of gallons of water a year.

Replacing an old toilet with a water-efficient one can save more than two gallons a flush.

Besides saving money on the sales tax, Forsyth County residents who purchase a WaterSense-labeled toilet may qualify for a rebate.

Details about the toilet rebate program — designed as an incentive for Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department customers to replace older, inefficient toilets — can be found on the Forsyth County Web site at or at
