A longtime Forsyth County banker was honored Friday.

BB&T on Dahlonega Street, near downtown Cumming, held a retirement reception for Wilma Moore.

Moore has been an employee there for 26 years. She also spent another 21 years at other banking locations, for a total of 47 years in the local banking industry.

Many of Moore’s co-workers and customers from throughout her career stopped by to congratulate her on her retirement.

Lewis Darnell, a customer of Moore’s since the mid-1980s, said he wouldn’t have missed the chance to wish her well.

“She’s been one of my favorite bank tellers and bank associates,” Darnell said. “She’s been a great person to work with … I’ve known her here and outside of the bank and she’s just a super lady.”

Fellow BB&T employee Rebecca Smith called Moore “a real blessing to work with.”

“She’s very special,” Smith said. “She’s always fun and cheerful.”

Tonya Nix, the branch’s manager, said Moore would definitely be missed and called her a “true example of customer service.”

“She’s very compassionate, very caring, giving,” Nix said. “She loved her clients and she loved her co-workers.

“She was an icon in this community.”

Moore said she was “overwhelmed and humbled” by Friday’s turnout.

“I’m just speechless,” she said. “I’m so thankful that everybody has come out to wish me well. It’s just been real sweet.”

As for her retirement, Moore said she planned to “just take each day as it comes right now and maybe do some traveling a little bit later.”
