Student’s postcard entry honored

POSTED: October 4, 2012 12:31 a.m.

A Forsyth County student recently met a former president.

Daniel Cox, a fifth-grader at Cumming Elementary School, claimed third place in a postcard contest held by the Jimmy Carter National Historical Society.

Each year, the society opens the contest to students in kindergarten through 12thgrades. They are encouraged to create unique postcard designs that in some way feature peanuts.

The 2012 contest theme was “Digging in Plains: Hometown of the 39thPresident.” First- through third-place winners were named in each grade level.

As one of the winners, Cox was invited to attend an awards ceremony in September in Plains, during the town’s annual Peanut Festival.

Carter presented him with a certificate and medal, and his work was on display during the festival.

Cox’ teacher, Tammy Waddell, also received a movie about Plains and a poster for use in her classroom.
