Forsyth County emergency personnel rescued the pilot of a lightweight aircraft Thursday night.

Lt. Debbie Lindstrom of the Forsyth County Fire Department said it received a 911 call about 5:45 p.m. Thursday from a home on Shady Grove Road.

“Upon our arrival there was a male suspended in the top of a tree by a parachute, and he was entangled in the tree, maybe 80 feet off the ground,” Lindstrom said.

The man had been flying a powered parachute, a vehicle similar to a go-cart with an attached parachute that allows it to take flight.

Lindstrom said firefighters were able to reach and rescue the man.

“We deployed our ladder truck and we extended the ladder up to him and we had two firefighters go up and secure him in a harness. He was able to come down the ladder on his own accord with our guys.”

Lindstrom said when he was safely on the ground, the man received examinations by emergency medical personnel.

“He had no injuries and didn’t need any treatment,” Lindstrom said. “He was happy to be on the ground.”

Cheryl Farkas, who owns the property on which the man was stuck, witnessed most of the rescue.

“Our neighbors have a landing strip and that’s where he took off from,” Farkas said. “He went up and caught a draft and it lifted him too much and he literally went to the top of the tree.

“He was literally hanging up in the tree. I mean, what are the chances?”

Farkas said she and her neighbors are all glad he was rescued safely with no injuries.

“Thank God he didn’t fall out of the tree or pass out,” she said. “Thank God he’s OK.”
