Tuesday last day to register to vote Nov. 6

POSTED: October 8, 2012 12:31 a.m.

Barbara Luth wants to make sure everyone gets to have a voice in the upcoming Nov. 6 election.

It’s why she’s encouraging all Forsyth County residents to register to vote. By Friday, 114,041 residents had registered, up more than 150 from Monday.

But with about 180,000 Forsyth residents, Luth said there are still many more who can register before the deadline Tuesday.

Despite Columbus Day holiday Monday, Luth said the elections office will be open to accept registration applications.

“It’s not a holiday for us,” she said. “So even though the deadline is on the 9th, we’ll be open on the 8th.”

Luth said the first debate Wednesday between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney helped increase the number of people registering to vote.

“Calling since Wednesday has picked up,” Luth said. “They’re both so close in the polls that the comments we’re getting are that people are wanting to vote in this election and they feel like it’s very important.”

Registration will run Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration applications must be post marked or delivered to the elections office before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to be valid.
