Charity auction benefits holiday gift efforts

Tickets available for Oct. 24 event

POSTED: October 15, 2012 12:32 a.m.

It’s not yet Halloween, but area real estate agents are hoping to jump start the Christmas shopping season.

The 400 North Board of Realtors will hold its Annual Charity Auction from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Windermere Golf Club in south Forsyth.

Sandy Zigler, board services director, said the event will offer “live entertainment and great food,” as well as live and silent auctions.

Last year’s effort raised more than $16,000, which Zigler said was divided among Angels Over Forsyth, Dawson County KARE for Kids and Lumpkin County Family Connection.

The three organizations provide Christmas gifts for children in need in their respective counties.

“The 400 North Board of Realtors represents those three counties and their jurisdictions,” Zigler said. “One of the things we’ve found, especially the farther north counties, seem to struggle with all the kids in the [foster care] system, etc., actually receiving gifts for the holidays.

“So these three organizations, when we issue our checks, they’re earmarked for holiday gifts for the kids.”

Zigler said silent and live auction items include a “wide variety” of items.

“There are vacation trips to Tuscany and Africa,” she said. “There’s jewelry and spa and hair salons and restaurants have donated gift certificates. There’s really something for everybody.”

According to Zigler, about 100 different items will be up for bid. “We’ve found for the time frame we’re in, 100 items works out well.”

In previous years, the event has been held at venues in Lumpkin County. However, this year, leaders decided to move it to Forsyth.

“Based on a survey of our three-county membership, we found out that 80 percent of our members are in Forsyth County,” Zigler said. “That was one of the reasons we changed locations is that we’re hoping to draw more attendance since we’re not in Lumpkin County this year.”

Last year’s fundraiser drew about 150 guests.

“Our goal is 200,” Zigler said. “If we could just increase it by 50, we’d be happy with that.”

Those interested in attending the event, which will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, can purchase “early bird” tickets through Tuesday by contacting the 400 North Board of Realtors’ office at (706) 216-5229 or online at www.400northboardofrealtors.org.

Tickets will also be available after Tuesday and at the door for $20.

“People should come out to support the families of their counties so that all the kids have a great Christmas this year,” Zigler said.
