No tax-exempt status until church is at site

The Forsyth County Board of Tax Assessors denied a request for tax-exempt status for a planned church.

The board voted 5-0 on Thursday afternoon to deny a request by Living Faith Lutheran for the status granted to religious institutions since the organization either hadn’t started construction or hadn’t provided proof of such.

The church plans to move from its location on Buford Dam Road to a permanent home on Atlanta Highway, north of Bethelview Road.

Generally, the office grants tax-exempt status if services are occurring on the property or if construction has started, said Tax Assessor Mary Kirkpatrick.

The board also denied a request for a homestead exemption for a woman who could not provide proof of her residence. The vote was 4-0 vote, with Phil Winter abstaining.

Following suit with last month’s meeting, members agreed 5-0 to cut in half the value of a 55-acre property that is another part of the planned Venable Hall community.

The owners had appealed based on the market value of sales and assessments of nearby sites.
