Trail N' Treat to offer tips

Safety event Saturday at Coal Mountain Park

POSTED: October 27, 2012 8:00 a.m.

Public safety officials will offer tips instead of tricks Saturday during Forsyth County’s third annual Trail ’N Treat.

The Halloween-themed safety event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Coal Mountain Park on Settingdown Road.

Families can learn about costume precautions, fire prevention, stranger danger and other measures to help stay safe this Halloween season, said Ed Figgelkow, Forsyth County fire prevention training officer.

Kids can also trick or treat in costume at the booths, get their faces painted or explore a spooky trail, said Figgelkow, who is organizing the event.

The event is free to the public, but families are asked to donate one bag of wrapped candy, which will be added to the county’s collection of treats to hand out.

Safe Kids Forsyth County has donated blinking red light buttons to give to children, Figgelkow said.

“So when they’re trick or treating next week on the 31st, it makes them more visible to traffic and makes a safer environment for them,” he said.

Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said if Trail ’N Treat helps one child learn a lesson on safety, the event has served its purpose.

“That’s the point is to have it prior to Halloween and offer the safety tips and suggestions in advance of the actual night of trick or treating,” Shivers said. “We have the ability to have fun with the children, let them continue to build trust in public safety, and at the same time, promote safety among themselves for the holiday season.”

Several county agencies and local organizations will be participating in the event, which has moved from its previous location at

Central Park to the Coal Mountain Park adjacent to the Forsyth County Public Safety Complex.
