For weeks, the boys in Pack 811 Den 7 sanded and painted in preparation for the Etowah District Cub Scout Cubmobile Race.

“We had two or three boys sanding at the same time and while they were sanding, we had another group painting,” said Johnathan McGowan, den leader.

“They like the competition and [preparing] too, so it gives them something to try their best at. And that’s what we’re focused on at Cub Scouts is doing your best.”

About 350 Scouts participated in the race, held Saturday at Dobbs Creek Park.

Racers pitted their cubmobiles in various heats for the fastest times. The wooden race cars ranged from simple designs to the more detailed Batmobile and DeLorean DMC-12 from the movie “Back to the Future.”

For Jordan Anthony, who won the second race he entered, the trick was to lean down as low as possible, he said. The painting was fun, but Anthony said his favorite part was the racing.

“All my friends were here and I got to race the cubmobile,” he said. “Racing the cubmobile was the fun part about it.”

Mica Alexander said son Tony, 6, had a blast.

“Anything with wheels that makes them go fast, they’re ready to go with, so this is exciting,” Alexander said. “And it’s exciting that they get to work together in groups and have healthy competition.”

But Alexander said the benefits extend beyond the race. The whole Scouting experience has been a positive one for her son, who is “naturally a social butterfly.”

“He’s very cooperative since he’s been in Boy Scouts and I see a lot of his leadership abilities come out,” she said.
