Holiday gathering approaches

Annual event open to everyone

POSTED: November 20, 2012 12:33 a.m.

A local church is looking for volunteers and participants for its annual Thanksgiving meal.

Cumming First United Methodist Church will hold its 12th annual dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. Meal delivery is also available.

Neida Streit, director of communications with the church, said the entire community is invited to the meal.

“It’s open to everyone,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re alone on Thanksgiving, or your family is just small, or Thanksgiving is too expensive for your budget or too much work for one meal. Some people come just because they like to be around a lot of people on Thanksgiving.”

Streit said the menu of turkey and dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato soufflé, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce and a range of desserts is donated by church members and the community.

Many people cook items at home and bring them to the church Wednesday, while some are prepared at the church Thanksgiving morning.

“The menu’s a full traditional Southern Thanksgiving meal,” she said. “It’s a lot of food.”

Lisa Burke, one of the main organizers of the event, said about 200 volunteers help each year.

“That includes people who cook or donate food, people who actually work at the church that day and go out with deliveries,” she said.

There is still some room for volunteers for this year’s meal.

“I know we still need people to cook and slice turkeys, make dressing and desserts and drive for deliveries,” Streit said.

Burke said the event has “grown every single year” and many people have come to depend on it.

“We have a lot of people that we deliver to every year and it’s nice to know that they can rely on us for their Thanksgiving meal,” she said.
