A 44-year-old Forsyth County man has died after he was struck by a van while attempting to cross Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 9) in south Forsyth.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Felix Escorcia died at North Fulton Hospital, where he had been taken after the collision Friday night.

Sheriff’s Capt. Tim House said Escorcia, who lived in the nearby Pine Ridge mobile home park, was struck about 8 p.m. by a 2004 Chevrolet van driven by Michael Dean Masi, 48, of Village Green Way.

“[Escorcia] was walking from the mobile home park to cross Atlanta Highway,” House said. “While he was in the southbound lane, he was struck by the oncoming van.”

House added that the impact threw Escorcia about 150 feet.

Masi was arrested at the scene on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. He has since been released from the Forsyth County Detention Center after posting a $3,850 bond, according to the sheriff’s office.

House said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

No other vehicles were involved. Masi, who was not injured, is scheduled to appear in State Court on Feb. 1.

The death was the second of the weekend on Forsyth County roads and came just ahead of the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which typically is one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Earlier Friday, a 43-year-old north Forsyth man was killed in a head-on collision between a pickup and chicken truck on Hwy. 369 and Hubert Martin Road.
