Two Forsyth County students have parts in a Christmas musical at the Horizon Theatre Company in Atlanta.

Brenna McConnell, a third-grader Settles Bridge Elementary School, will play Madeline in the fifth annual production of “Madeline’s Christmas.”

Sarah Carroll, a Vickery Creek Elementary fourth-grader, will play her friend, Anne.

The show, produced in collaboration with The Atlanta Children’s Theatre Company, features two casts of 12 girls each performing with professional adult actors.

McConnell, 9, said she is “really excited about performing in front of all those people” on the stage in Little Five Points for 16 shows, running Dec. 8-30.

In the play, based on Ludwig Bemelmans’ book, Madeline is the only one of her classmates who doesn’t get sick before Christmas, McConnell said.

As the girls wonder how they will get home to see their families, she said, a magician comes to visit.

McConnell said the family musical is fun because the children and adult actors sing and perform together.

She said she thinks she has the most lines, and relishes playing the part of Madeline.

“I like it because she’s really not afraid of anything, and she just has sort of a spunk to her,” said McConnell, adding that she’s not that different.

Her mother, Beth, said her daughter loves to be on stage. They learned of this audition through an acting instructor.

More than 100 children auditioned for the 24 spots.

“We were shocked and were really excited for her because she was just over the moon when she found out that she got the part,” Beth McConnell said. “To work with professional actors and do a show that involves this many performances, we just knew it would be a great experience for Brenna.”

Sarah Carroll’s mom, Kristen, said the professional stage in Atlanta was also an exciting opportunity for her daughter, who has appeared in several previous shows.

“She saw it last year and from that moment forward, she wanted to be in it this year,” she said. “She had her heart set on it.”

Sarah Carroll said her character, Anne, often repeats after Madeline because she gets excited.

She likes to act because she gets to be different people and perform for others.

People will enjoy this show, she said, because “It’s Christmastime and all the girls are having fun. It’s a really cute play.”

Both girls will be in the 16 performances of the green cast.
