The Cumming Aquatic Center soon will offer free memberships for some seniors.

Beginning Saturday, the center will take part in the SilverSneakers program, which allows seniors enrolled in Medicare and some insurance plans to take advantage of physical fitness programs at no charge.

Carla Wilson, aquatic center manager, said it’s “the nation’s leading, fully-funded Medicare exercise program for older adults.”

“SilverSneakers has over 1 million members across the country,” she said.

The program will include a basic membership to the aquatic center, which Wilson said will allow access to any of the facility’s three pools.

“That includes the competition pool for lap swimming and use of the instructional pool during adult or open swim times, and the outdoor leisure pool when it’s open,” she said.

Two additional classes will be added in the spring under the SilverSneakers program.

According to Wilson, they will include a traditional aqua course called Silver Splash.

“That’s basically a fun class that includes shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility and cardio endurance,” she said. “You don’t need to know how to swim to be able to take it. It’s shallow water and they’ll be using kick boards and things.”

The other class is called SilverSneakers Muscular Strength Range of Movement, or MSROM.

Wilson said that offering will be the center’s first land class.

“We have a therapy room that’s located between the instructional pool and the competition pool and that’s where we’ll hold that class,” she said.

“The land-based class will use hand-held weights, tubing and balls for resistance and chairs for seated and standing support.”

Wilson said the exact schedule for the two new classes has not been determined, but they likely will begin sometime around the beginning of March.

She said other center members will be able to take the SilverSneakers’ classes, but will have to pay the regular class fees while SilverSneakers program members can take them for free.

“We’re really excited about it because we’ve had so many customers that have expressed interest in this through the year-and-a-half that we’ve been open,” Wilson said. “We’re excited to actually be able to move forward with this and offer it.”
