Basketball: Central boys fall to North Springs in region opener

Bulldogs commit 21 turnovers

POSTED: December 3, 2012 4:54 p.m.

SANDY SPRINGS — Twenty-one turnovers were too much for Forsyth Central’s boys to overcome.

The Bulldogs tied the game 33-33 with 5:24 left in the third quarter but couldn’t take the lead, as North Springs pulled away for a 56-44 victory in the Region 7A-AAAAA opener on Friday at North Springs High School.

"We’ve got a bunch of good kids, and they play hard," Central head coach Greg Dirst said. "We just didn’t shoot the ball well and turned the ball over 21 times; it wasn’t the ideal scenario. We seem to can’t get out of the 40s [in points]."

Central (0-4) has scored more than 45 points only once, a 65-52 loss to South Forsyth to open the season.

The Bulldogs trailed 31-23 at halftime, but came out on fire to open the third quarter, as they went on a 10-2 run and forced North Springs (1-2) to call a timeout.

The Spartans responded with a 7-2 run of their own, capped off by a dunk from B. Miller that made the score 41-35 with 3:14 left in the quarter and immediately caused Dirst to use a timeout.

Neither team did much following the timeout as North Springs took a 43-36 lead to end the third quarter. But North Springs pulled away in the fourth and claimed a 10 point advantage with under four minutes to play before eventually winning 56-44.

Central shot just 47 percent from the free-throw line, while the Spartans finished the game at 67 percent.

"I think they made their own luck," Dirst said. "There’s no one to blame but [me]. We have to fix [our turnovers] and turn it around. My guys will show up on Monday, hopefully ready to go. We have a big week next week."

Walter Cole was 7-of-12 from the field with 19 points, while B. Miller (17) and Robert Sakulandy (10) both finished in double figures for North Springs.

The Bulldogs were led by Jeremiah Jones with 13 points, while Ryder Bowline contributed 10.

Central will host Cambridge on Tuesday.
