Community encouraged to give Thursday

Nonprofits join for Georgia Gives Day

POSTED: December 5, 2012 7:00 p.m.

Several Forsyth County nonprofits are asking the community to take part in Georgia Gives Day on Thursday.

In November, Gov. Nathan Deal and the Georgia Center for Nonprofits announced the event.

According to its Web site, the goal is to “raise as much money and awareness as possible for Georgia nonprofits within a 24-hour ‘flash mob’ of giving.”

Residents throughout the state are asked to simply go to www.GAgivesday.org and click on a nonprofit they wish to support to make a donation to that organization.

According to the Georgia Gives Web site, “Whether you have $10 or $10,000 to give, it all adds up.”

Among the Forsyth County groups listed on the site are Court Appointed Special Advocates, Mentor Me North Georgia, Family Haven, Bald Ridge Lodge and Jesse’s House.

Sylvia Cardona, executive director of the local Mentor Me, said the day is “helping us get that message out to more people than we are able to on our own.”

“By teaming up to get the word out, it helps smaller organizations like Mentor Me reach a wider audience,” she said.

“In Forsyth County, an investment of about $2 per day helps save the county up to $300 a day in costs since children with mentors perform better in school and make better choices, which helps keep them out of legal trouble and helps them graduate on time.”

Janet Walden, executive director of CASA of Forsyth County, which provides adult advocates for children involved in court cases, said events such as Georgia Gives have taken on new significance.

“Over the past several years, many nonprofits like CASA, have seen our budgets tighten as the scope of our work has expanded,” she said.

“I cannot think of a better time than the holiday season for families to search through the list of nonprofits in their community and choose to support a cause near to their hearts.”
