POSTED: December 12, 2012 10:41 a.m.

The names of two people found dead Monday night in what authorities have said was a murder-suicide were released this morning.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the man has been identified as John Vitkow, 65, and the woman as his former wife, Nancy Lee Vitkow, 66.

They were found in a house on Stonehill Drive in the Pines at Stonegate subdivision in south Forsyth.

Sheriff’s investigators were able to find and notify family members Tuesday night.

Murder-suicides are rare in Forsyth County, with Coroner Lauren McDonald having said this is likely the first such case in at least four or five years.

The bodies were sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Vitkows were found sitting next to each other on a living room couch Monday night. Both had gunshot wounds to the head.

Sheriff’s Capt. Tim House said Tuesday that the man “called authorities shortly before 10 p.m. saying he had just shot [the woman]."

“The deputies were familiar with these folks and the gentleman had indicated on his phone call to 911 that he and [the woman] were having some marital problems,” House said.

According to authorities, no other people, including children, were present and there were no signs of a struggle.

When the call came in, House has said, the man told authorities he had shot the woman with a .357 magnum and “that he planned on killing himself and that he was going to leave the front door unlocked.”
