Nearly 200 cyclists — double what organizers were expecting — turned out Sunday for the Holiday Clothing Drive and Ride.

The annual effort collects underwear, socks and pajamas for middle school-age homeless children.

The event, a partnership between Reality Bikes, Dutch Monkey Doughnuts and Little Mill Middle School, also brought in more donations than expected, said Todd Muller, owner of the bike shop.

To participate in the 26- or 55-mile ride, participants needed to bring at least one package of clothing.

“Last year, what we collected helped clothe these kids until August,” said Muller, adding that this year’s haul will last “hopefully until the next holiday season.”

“It was like a mountain high of underwear and socks,” he said.

The ride took bicyclists along two paths, one for advanced groups and one for beginners.

In addition to recruiting help from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office for next year’s race, Muller said organizers are talking about other ways to improve the ride.

“I think we’ll try to grow our beginner ride again next year,” he said. “It’s a great way to get out there and be on the road but in numbers and be safer.”
