County parking deck closing forever

Will be razed for courthouse

POSTED: December 15, 2012 12:34 a.m.

Forsyth County plans to permanently close the parking deck at East Main and Mason streets in downtown Cumming on Dec. 28.

All vehicles parked there must be removed by 6 p.m. that day, according to a news release from the county government.

The parking deck is being razed to make way for a new county courthouse.

Voters approved the project in November 2011 as part of a referendum on extending the 1-cent sales tax.

After the deck is closed, jurors and others courthouse visitors should use the parking lot at corner of Maple Street and Castleberry Road.

In a statement, County Manager Doug Derrer thanked residents for their patience and understanding.

“Throughout this project, there will certainly be a lot of activity and changes taking place in downtown Cumming, starting with the demolition of the structures currently on the site of the new courthouse,” Derrer said.

As part of the new courthouse project, plans call for a four-level parking deck with about 450 spots to be built behind the county administration building.

In addition, a one-level deck with about 250 spots will go in at the corner of Maple and Castleberry.
