Fundraiser Saturday aids ailing mom of four

A Midway eatery is holding a fundraiser Saturday for a woman with a rare medical condition.

The event, set for 2 to 9 p.m. at Smokejack barbecue restaurant on Post Road, will benefit Amy Crowe, a Forsyth County wife and mother of four.

Angelita Palmer, one of the organizers, said Crowe was diagnosed last summer with Mitochondrial Leigh Syndrome, a genetic disorder usually found in young children.

“Basically it stops her body from producing energy, so something as simple as walking up a flight of stairs can put her in the hospital,” Palmer said.

“There is no cure at this point. What they’re trying to do is if they can find out exactly where the defect is in her mitochondria, they can at least slow down [the progression].”

Funds raised Saturday will go toward Crowe’s medical expenses, which Palmer said are mounting as her insurance doesn’t cover much of her treatment costs.

“She’s on tons of medication, a constant IV and a lot of alternative stuff to try to help her body produce any energy it can,” Palmer said.

The event will also feature live music and a silent auction. Smokejack will donate at least 10 percent of all of its sales that day to the cause.

“A lot of businesses have donated gift cards and baskets and things all around Cumming,” Palmer said. “We’re also having a special pomegranate martini because she loves pomegranate martinis.”

Palmer is hoping for a good turnout because Crowe is the kind of person who usually gives to others.

“She used to be a very active person, always volunteering at her girls’ schools and doing a lot of things for other people,” Palmer said. “We really want to help the family as much as we can.”
