Punish those who abuse steroids

POSTED: January 27, 2013 8:00 a.m.

Steroid abuse can make you stronger, yes. But it can also make you depressed, bald, angry, and can even make you have suicidal tendencies. Plus, if athletes take steroids, it takes the athleticism out of sports.  It takes away the talent needed and makes it all about who the steroids affect the most in areas such as strength, and who it affects the least in other areas.

Other people say that it would make sports more exciting, because players could do more. But it is not about higher numbers. It is about the game and the physical effects of steroids. In a recent study it was shown that over 1,000,000 adult Americans admitted to having used steroids at one time or another.  About 175,000 teenage girls admitted to using them in the past year. That is an increase of 100 percent since 1991.

A survey conducted by the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) in 2001 found that 5 percent of all high school students admitted to taking steroids without a qualified doctors approval and prescription. They also found that 4.3 percent of 12th graders admitted to illegal usage of steroids. That is an alarming amount for that age.

There are a few things that can be done to prevent steroid abuse. But there are a couple of things that seem better than the others. First of all, athletes need to have random drug tests throughout the year.  They should also be suspended a number of games, depending on the sport, if they are caught using them. If a student is suspected to be using them, they should be tested for them and suspended from school for a certain number of days.
