February is 'Pine for Spring Month'

POSTED: February 5, 2013 12:01 p.m.

Who exactly gets to decide what things are recognized as “National _____ Month?”

For example, this is February. I saw that among other things, this is National Snack Food Month.

What? Who decided that? The junk food industry?

Did they lobby against the dentistry industry because it is also National Dental Month?

Valentine’s Day is this month. I am fairly certain that is why it is also Chocolate Lover’s Month. Did the dentists get their month before or after that was declared?

It is also the Great American Pie Month. Lots of food celebrating going on in the month of February. Perhaps that is because the weather is usually quite ugly in February so people are staying indoors and eating.

A particularly odd declaration is that February is National Return Shopping Carts to the Supermarket Month.

Am I in the dark here? I was completely unaware this was a problem. Is there some sort of a cartel stealing shopping carts?

Who decided the public needed to be aware of this “problem” and how was it declared?

Was there some petition being passed around that I missed?

I like to think I’m a fairly informed person, but seeing these things makes me feel as if I missed something.

Can anybody decide what “national month” it is? If so, I have some ideas of my own.

February is hereby declared National Ugliest Month of the Year.

February is National Pine for Spring Month.

February is National Comfort Food Month.

February is National Officially Break Your Lose Weight New Year’s Resolution Month.

February is National Stay Home In Your Pajamas Near a Space Heater Month.

Do you think I am being silly here? Well, it is also National Human Relations Month. I am trying to relate to these “holidays” and I am using my forum to help all of you relate as well.

It is also National Boost-Your-Self-Esteem Month. I am not sure if we need to continue building up our young people’s self esteem.

I saw a recent study that showed college kids think they are smarter than they are and yet study much less than we did when we were in school. Their test scores don’t seem to show they are smarter than we were, but they have high self-esteem.

Maybe instead February should be National Stop Your Entitlement Month. Maybe we could start a movement to help young people learn how things are in the real world. Hard work and determination, in my mind, trump how smart or great you think you are.

One more thing. February is also National Bird Feeding Month. That is something to pay attention to. I love seeing the birds eating their seed on my deck.

I don’t enjoy fighting with our infestation of squirrels, but that’s another story.

The birds remind me that spring will be here soon and that February is thankfully the shortest month for a reason.
