West club plans to 'Unmask the Night'

Prom fashion show Thursday

Prom fashion will be unmasked Thursday at West Forsyth High School.

Continuing the run of prom fashion shows in the Forsyth County school system, West’s DECA students are holding their fifth annual event with the theme “Unmask the Night.”

Gwen Belue, fashion marketing teacher and DECA adviser, said the first half of the show will be based on “Phantom of the Opera” and the second half will finish with a focus on Mardi Gras.

“It’s something the kids look forward to. We put a lot of time into it,” Belue said. “The cosmetology students do the hair and makeup and our art department helps us with some of the sets, so it’s another good way for the kids in the school to come together and work together for a great end result.”

She added that it’s also a “great way for us to work with businesses in the community.”

According to Belue, the fashion show typically brings in about $4,000 for the students — all of which goes toward the DECA Club’s expenses in traveling to state and national conferences.

Junior Rachel Jackson said she’s been looking forward to participating in the fashion show for years.

“It’s a fun thing that only juniors and seniors get to do,” she said. “It’s like a privilege. I go watch it every year.”

Jackson will be one of 80 models during the show. She also has helped plan dress rehearsal practices, props and is on a team with two other girls in charge of “budget planning and financial solutions.”

Jackson noted that the show will also feature skits. While there’s no dialogue, models have practiced humorous interactions “to make people laugh.”

“I think [people] will have a lot of fun because a lot of the skits and stuff are funny,” Jackson said. “It’s just a fun environment to be in.”
