Thursday was an exciting day for the pre-kindergarten students at Pinecrest Academy.

As part of the south Forsyth private school’s second annual Transportation Day, the students began their morning by boarding school buses that took them to the soccer field.

“A lot of these children have never ridden on a bus before, but that’s how their day started,” said Vivian Heard, academy spokeswoman.

“They learned about buses, when they ride the bus, and they went to the athletic fields and watched as a hot air balloon was inflated and learned a lesson on hot air balloons.”

In addition to the balloon, students also got to watch a helicopter land on the field.

“The helicopter pilot explained how the helicopter works and what the parts are and how to be safe and interesting statistics on how a helicopter runs,” Heard said. “The children … were asking constant questions.”

Heard said the lesson teaches children about the various types of transportation and prepares them to know how to be a passenger, including when the school uses buses for field trips.

Transportation Day likely will become a Pinecrest tradition, said Heard, adding that school officials would like to add a boat next year.
