North bowl team takes academic title

POSTED: February 16, 2013 4:30 p.m.

Down by 100 points in the semifinals, the situation looked bleak for the eight freshmen and sophomores on North Forsyth High School’s junior varsity academic bowl team.

But the squad overcame the deficit and went on to become state champions at the RESA Academic Bowl.

“It was extremely nerve wracking when we were behind in the semi-finals … but I just felt like they could do it,” said Amy Dykes, JV academic bowl coach. “It was amazing. They had worked so hard for that so I just felt so proud for them and so excited.”

North qualified for the state competition after placing first in its regional competition, one slot ahead of rival Forsyth Central. South Forsyth placed third in the region.

“It was really neat because first, second and third place were all from Forsyth County,” Dykes said.

The three faced off against 17 other teams at the state competition, answering questions in math, science, language arts and social studies.

Teams also had to respond to about a dozen questions on a current events worksheet before making it to the bonus round.

Only North made it through the round robin tournament, single-elimination challenge and quarterfinals.

“In quarterfinals, we ended up facing off against Central again. Central has been our rival so it’s interesting the way things have fallen with our two groups,” Dykes said. “Our very first competition we lost to Central … [that] was our only loss.”

Up next for the JV team is the Georgia Academic Team Association tournament Feb. 23, which is a qualifier for the National Association of Quiz Teams Tournament.
