Fundraiser Saturday for mentoring group

POSTED: February 21, 2013 12:30 a.m.

The public is invited to bowl for a good cause Saturday as Mentor Me North Georgia holds its annual Bowl for Kids at Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center.

Sylvia Cardona, executive director of the organization, which matches kids with caring adult mentors, said Bowl for Kids is a fundraiser and also a good way for people to learn more about Mentor Me.

“Supporters from the community will have a chance to see some of our mentors and mentees having fun,” she said. “And that’s all mentoring is. It’s so easy.”

Logan Thomas, who was named the 2012 Male Mentor of the Year, said attending the event also is a good way for anyone thinking about becoming a mentor to learn about the organization.

Thomas actually met his mentee during a previous bowling event.

“We discovered that we had similar interests,” Thomas said in a statement. “After learning that he did not have an adult male in his home, it occurred to me that being a mentor to him would be a way to get personally involved and make a contribution.”

Every $1,000 raised helps to create a new mentoring match between an adult and a child between the ages of 6 and 17, Cardona said.

More than 50 children in Forsyth are currently matched with a mentor, and more than 350 are involved in other Mentor Me programs such as in-school clubs and after-school homework assistance programs.

Bowl for Kids is open to anyone interested in helping the organization, Cardona said.

“People should come out to have fun and to show support for kids in our community,” she said.

There will be two bowling sessions. The first is at 10 a.m. and the second at noon.

Cost to attend is $25 and includes two hours of bowling, shoes and a pizza lunch.

Anyone interested in attending should register in advance online at www.MentorMe.kintera.org.
