Council reviews sewer projects

Work would serve Bald Ridge area

POSTED: February 21, 2013 12:32 a.m.

Cumming Utilities Department soon will begin work on a new sewer pump station to benefit businesses and residents along Bald Ridge Marina Road.

During their regular meeting Tuesday night, Cumming’s mayor and council approved advertising for bids to build the station.

Utilities director Jon Heard said the department would advertise over the next couple months and return in April with the proposals for the council to approve.

Heard said the area, which is near Market Place Boulevard, currently has water service through the city, but not sewer.

“We’ve had several requests for sewer service in the Bald Ridge Marina drain space and … we have a design for a pump station, a force main and gravity sewer line for that basin,” Heard said.

The council also approved buying one-third of an acre on which the pump station would sit for about $6,700.

Heard said the Edge Water at Lanier home owners association currently owns the land.

“We have real estate professionals who have looked at it and believe that’s a very fair price,” Heard said.

Heard also asked council to approve advertising bids for a 12-inch water line along Market Place Boulevard.

Heard said the larger line is needed to increase water pressure and flow due to the number of businesses.

He said the new line would extend from Mary Alice Park Road, along Market Place Boulevard and end at Bald Ridge Marina Road.

Heard also presented the mayor and council with a commercial sewer rate study, which he said indicates the city is well below the area average for commercial sewer rates.

He said a proposal to possibly raise those rates will be presented during next month’s council meeting March 19.
