Friends bookstore marks milestone

Anniversary sale ends Thursday

POSTED: February 23, 2013 12:17 a.m.

The Forsyth County Public Library Friends and Advocates is celebrating the first anniversary of its bookstore with a sale that started Friday and ends Thursday.

Each day features a half-price sale on a certain area of the store’s inventory.

The anniversary sale is open to the public and will take place during library hours.

The Friends bookstore, located next to the children’s area in the Cumming library branch, opened in February 2012 as a single room with shelves on cinderblocks.

Since then, the store has doubled in size and has inventory on new shelves purchased from an out-of-business bookstore, plus friendly volunteers who staff it.

The Friends group receives donations of books every day and rotate inventory so there is always something new on the shelves.

“It’s a happy place to be,” said Lynn Pansen, Friends president. “It looks like a bookstore and we make it easy to find what you’re looking for.”

Since opening, the store has raised more than $20,000. Proceeds help fund library programs. The Friends organization is instrumental in funding supplies and performers for the library’s annual Summer Reading Program.

As the bookstore continues to grow and attract new customers, there are plans to expand. The new Post Road library, expected to open in July, will also house a bookstore.
