Legislator tapped for two committees

POSTED: February 23, 2013 12:16 a.m.

A state lawmaker who represents part of Forsyth County has been appointed to serve on the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Environment Committee.

District 22 state Rep. Calvin Hill, a Republican from Canton, also was tapped for the conference’s Energy, Transportation and Agriculture Committee.

In a statement, Hill said was “quite an honor to be appointed” to represent Georgia on the two national committees. The appointments are for two years concurrent with his state term.

“I appreciate this opportunity to provide input from the perspective of those of us here in Georgia on these important national and international policymaking committees,” he said.

Hill, whose district includes some of southwest Forsyth, was appointed to the committees by David Ralston, speaker of the state House of Representatives.

Both committees represent state interests in Washington, D.C., and in the facilitating policy innovation among the state and territorial legislatures.

The committees also provide a forum for the discussion of major issues facing the states, allowing legislators to learn from the experiences of other states.

Both committees are part of the national conference, a bipartisan organization that serves legislators and staffs from all 50 states, providing research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues.

The environment committee is charged with educating Congress and federal agencies about concerns regarding state and federal natural resources legislation, regulations and policies.

The energy, transportation and agriculture committee convenes three times a year in conjunction with the conference’s national meeting.

It has jurisdiction over legislation, regulation and policies affecting state-federal energy and electric utilities, transportation and agriculture and rural development.
