NORCROSS — Brandon Goodwin’s alley-oop dunk from Andre Chatfield less than 10 seconds into the game was a preview of things to come.

No. 3-ranked Norcross dominated every phase of the game and dealt Lambert its worst loss in program history with an 81-24 victory in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs on Wednesday at the Blue Devils’ gymnasium.

Goodwin (21 points), Ricky Madison (16) and Chatfield (12) combined for 49 points for the No. 1 seed Blue Devils before they were pulled from the game in the fourth quarter.

"That’s the best I’ve seen Norcross play," Lambert first-year head coach Scott Bracco said. "You’ve got to give them credit. They played great on the defensive end and that caused us a lot of problems.

"I believe our boys played hard. Norcross is a physical team. We learned a lot from this game and we’re going to work in the offseason to prepare and to make a great run in the state [playoffs] next year."

No. 4 seed Lambert (17-12) hung with Norcross (23-6) in the first quarter and trailed by 10, but the Blue Devils’ Thomas Cameron put the exclamation mark on a 22-7 run with a dunk as time expired to end the second quarter ahead 39-14.

The second half wasn’t any easier for the Longhorns as they were outscored 42-10.

Logan Bush led Lambert with 12 points.

"It’s our first trip to the state tournament and our boys were pretty excited about making the state tournament," Bracco said. "Next year, we’re going to have a different mindset and try to win a state championship."

Lambert’s 17 wins this season set a new program record. The Longhorns have improved their overall record each season since beginning play in the 2009-10 season.
