West Forsyth’s girls lacrosse team took control of the area opener from the opening whistle.

Monica Martelli completed a hat trick before the end of the first half as the Lady Wolverines ran out to a 7-0 lead and held on to defeat Lambert 13-6 in the Area 3-AAAAAA opener on Tuesday at The Horn.

Martelli finished with a game-high four goals.

"This was a nice win for our team," West head coach Dan Kaplan said.

"Our seniors are determined to make their final season at West special. We have a great class of seniors that push each other every day to be as good as they possibly can. I can’t say enough about their leadership tonight."

Haley Hess scored West’s first goal four minutes into a drive to the cage from the top of the 12-meter arc.

Less than a minute later, Hess factored into another goal. Taking off from midfield with the draw control, Hess hit Martelli in stride to double the lead to 2-0.

Martelli added another goal two minutes later off a Lambert foul, then scored in transition off the next draw to put the Wolverines (3-0, 1-0 area) up 4-0.

West’s midfield defense forced multiple turnovers with its early pressure. Lambert didn’t get its first shot on goal until 10 minutes into the game, and it was saved by goalie Marisa Martelli.

From there West scored three times in a two minute span. Laura Sheffield assisted Hannah Supik and Jessie Coley on goals before Cece Bailey added West’s seventh score.

"Laura is essentially the quarterback for our team," Kaplan said. "Plays are relayed to her and she gets us in the rights sets."

Lambert got on the scoreboard with nine minutes left in the half when Sarah Youtsey split a double team on a crease roll, but Bailey answered for West four minutes later when she once again found herself in a one on one matchup.

"Cece played very well for us tonight," Kaplan said. "She was under control and her shot selection was terrific."

Gabby Case added a goal for West to make the score 8-2 at halftime.

The second half opened much like the first, as Sheffield scored her lone goal of the game off a feed from Supik 90 seconds in.

After falling behind 10-2, Lambert countered with two goals in a one-minute span. Deena Kasmarik made a nice pass to Becky Raines on a fast break for the first, before Danielle Dollar scored the first of her two goals with a shot through a double team to bring Lambert within six goals.

That was as close as Lambert could get, as Supik scored off a curl around the cage on an assist from Monica Martelli.

Martelli added her fourth goal shortly afterward, and West freshman Sarah Grady tacked on one more goal to seal the win.
