Soccer: Michaud's goals rally North boys past West

Raiders overcome 2-1 deficit in second half

POSTED: February 28, 2013 6:31 p.m.

North Forsyth’s first win of the season couldn’t have come at a better time.

Sophomore Jeff Michaud scored two goals in the second half as the Raiders soccer team rallied to edge rival West Forsyth 3-2 on Tuesday at The Den.

West was forced to play a man down for over half of the game after Amani Omieno was sent off following his second yellow card of the match at the 12:58 mark in the first period. North took full advantage of the situation and sent more players closer to West’s box.

"In the second half, we came out a lot more aggressive than we did in the first half," North head coach Jeff Jager said. "A lot of times, we were reacting to the ball and we started anticipating a little bit more. It was a sloppy game, but my guys kept their heads straight."

"That helped us out [that West played a man down]. They had to drop one [player] back [for defense] and that opened up the midfield a little bit, so we were able to press a little bit."

With North down by one midway through the second half, Michaud was able to avoid defenders and keep control of the ball to take a shot from only a few yards away to tie the game at 2-2.

The Raiders (1-3-1, 1-2 Region 6-AAAAAA) continued to attack and worked the ball back up the field to Michaud. He dribbled the ball to the far right side of the box before West was called for a foul just inside the box to setup a penalty kick.

Michaud found an opening on the left side of the goal to give North a 3-2 lead with 17:14 left on the clock.

"Once the first [shot] went in, I was like, ‘I got to score another one’," Michaud said. "I had to represent the school well.

"We just wanted to get a region win, so it felt great to get that. …It feels amazing to knock off West."

The Wolverines had an opportunity to tie the game with 45 seconds left in the game, but the header was barely off target.

Ryan Herbert took an aggressive approach to start the match as he found the back of the net in less than two minutes of play to give North an early 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines (2-3, 1-2) settled down on the defensive end and continued to work the ball up field. Midfielder John Newman showed off his dribbling skills and created space from the defender to have a scoring opportunity from 20 yards away. Newman blasted the ball past the outstretched arms of keeper Alex Hanson to tie the game at 1-1.

Three minutes later, Ranier Lopez crossed the ball to Kwaku Adu-Boahene to set up an easy goal for West and a 2-1 lead at halftime.

North hosts Alpharetta on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while West Forsyth will travel to Chattahoochee at 8 p.m.
