'Rabbit fever' cause for concern

POSTED: March 3, 2013 8:00 a.m.

Officials with both the North Carolina Division of Public Health and the Wildlife Commission are urging hunters to be wary of rabbit fever after two hunters contracted it this month.

The disease, tularemia, is a rare and possibly fatal infection. Marilyn Haskel, a veterinarian and epidemiologist with the DPH said you can get very sick and the rabbit can appear very normal.

We are nearing the Easter season when many children receive baby chickens and pet rabbits. I hope the parents will be aware of the disease and buy their children something else.
