A Forsyth County Fire Department official urged members of the Cumming chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America to participate in the “Vial of Life” program.

Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers told the group during its recent meeting that the program, which is free, gives emergency personnel access to medical information in situations where an ailing person may not be able to communicate.

The vials resemble a large pill bottle that contains a form that residents fill out with their medical history, medications, allergies and other crucial information.

The program is sponsored by Kroger Pharmacy at no cost to taxpayers, Shivers said.

Those interested in taking part can get a vial by visiting any fire station or calling the department’s headquarters at (770) 781-2180.

Shivers also provided the veterans group with an overview of the 157-person department, which operates 12 fire stations on a $17 million annual budget.

In response to a question about reducing fire danger at home, Shivers encouraged club members to ensure their fireplaces and chimneys are properly maintained.
