Reminder: Time change tonight

Officials: Remember to 'spring' forward

POSTED: March 9, 2013 12:04 a.m.

It’s almost time again to change the clocks.

Move the little hand forward an hour once daylight-saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday.

As residents “spring” forward, the Forsyth County Fire Department encourages them to also change the batteries their in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

According to Division Chief Jason Shivers, “Replacing the batteries in the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your house twice each year is a simple task that could potentially prove life-saving.

“A convenient way to remember to do so is by changing these batteries at the same time as you change the clocks in your home.”

The fire department recommends testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least once a month and replacing the batteries every six months, according to a news release.

The units themselves should be replaced every eight to 10 years.

In a statement, Fire Chief Danny Bowman said officials can’t stress enough the “critical need for working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout every level of a home.”

“It is important to remember that you have no sense of smell when you are asleep, so smoke detectors are your only hope of being alerted to a fire,” he said.
