New solicitor general appointed

Governor taps Gopaul for position

POSTED: March 12, 2013 12:31 a.m.

Gov. Nathan Deal has announced the appointment of attorney Donna S. Gopaul to fill the solicitor general vacancy in Forsyth County.

The opening was created when former solicitor Leslie Abernathy Maddox was appointed as a State Court judge in the Bell-Forsyth Judicial Circuit.

According to a news release from the state, Gopaul is the sole practitioner and owner of the Gopaul Law Firm in Fayetteville.

She previously served as an assistant public defender in the Griffin Judicial Circuit, as well as assistant solicitor-general in the Forsyth County Solicitor-General’s Office.

A Cumming resident, Gopaul earned her bachelor’s degree from Agnes Scott College and her law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

Since Abernathy-Maddox took the bench in January, the former chief assistant, Amy Radley, has served as interim solicitor.

The office prosecutes misdemeanor criminal cases — including driving under the influence, simple drug possession and domestic violence — in the county’s State Court.

A swearing-in date has not yet been set for Gopaul.
