Board backs new SAFFT location

POSTED: March 14, 2013 12:28 a.m.

During a work session Tuesday, the Forsyth County commission requested that a lease be drafted for the nonprofit Supporting Adoption and Foster Families Together to rent a building in Cumming for $1,500 per month.

The group currently uses a building on a county-owned property for free, but needs a larger facility to implement requirements of a recently received grant and meet the growing needs of the juvenile courts.

In other action, commissioners:

• Set a $10,000 local supplement in 2013 for the new Forsyth County solicitor general, who receives a state-paid salary of about $103,000.

The former solicitor received a county supplement of nearly $20,000 after 16 years on the job due to cost of living adjustments.

• Sent proposed unified development code and alcohol ordinance modifications to public hearings.

The UDC changes include administrative variances and changes to residential zoning standards.

Alcohol code modifications would allow more processing of violations or license changes at the staff level rather than at commission meetings, among other considered amendments.

• Directed staff to put together a formal code proposal for a Buford Highway design overlay from the city limits to the Chattahoochee River.

The aesthetic requirements, such as a landscape strip, would apply to commercial businesses on the corridor.

• Discussed possible code additions to address the sale of drug paraphernalia, such as requiring that items sold for tobacco use are put out of public view.

Note: All votes were 5-0 unless otherwise noted.
