There was a seven-way tie for first Friday during a regional academic recognition luncheon in Forsyth County.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition, or STAR, awards honor high-achieving high school seniors and their most inspirational teacher. This year’s seven honorees each scored a perfect 2400 on the SAT.

“There’s always a tie in this region because they’re very strong academically,” said Allene Magill, executive director of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, which sponsors the competition.

“We have a bright future because there are more high-achieving students than the public really realizes … and it’s an honor.”
Friday’s banquet, held at the Windermere Country Club, welcomed winners from all school systems in the region, including Forsyth County.

Forsyth’s representatives — Casey Kim of Lambert High and Christina Hansen of North Forsyth — each scored 2390 on the SAT, just 10 points shy of perfection.

The seven winners, who will go on to compete at the state level in April, hailed from Atlanta City Schools and the Cobb County and Fulton County school systems.

Most of the region’s 18 finalists attended the luncheon. They talked about their future plans and why they selected their STAR teachers. The teachers, in turn, highlighted the best qualities of their student.

“Congratulations to all STAR students and all STAR teachers,” said Randy Meincke, region chairman. “We wish all of you continued success in your educational aspirations and experiences.”
