Man sentenced in fatal wreck

Passenger died following collision

POSTED: March 25, 2013 12:30 a.m.

An Alpharetta man has pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide related to the death of his 20-year-old passenger in an April wreck.

Jorge Humberto Ruano, 22, was sentenced Wednesday to one year of probation, 250 hours of community service and a $500 fine by Forsyth County State Court Judge Russell McClelland.

Ruano will also make a $1,000 donation to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in the name of Gustavo Ramirez, who died in the wreck, and write a letter of apology to his family.

The two-vehicle collision occurred about 9 p.m. April 6 at McFarland Parkway and Union Hill Road.

Authorities said Ruano was driving east in a 2004 Toyota Corolla, which was struck by a 2002 GMC Yukon while attempting to turn left off McFarland onto Union Hill.

Ramirez, a passenger in the Corolla, was taken to North Fulton Hospital, where he later died.

Ruano was charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree and failure to yield while turning, which was merged with the first count in the negotiated plea.

The driver of the Yukon, Ronald Harris, was not injured in the collision but was charged with driving under the influence.
