'Celtic Voices' will fill Playhouse

Performance one night only

POSTED: March 24, 2013 12:20 a.m.

The Cumming Playhouse Singers will close out their season Tuesday with a one-night-only performance of “Celtic Voices.”

The community chorus of nearly 60 members will present Scottish, Irish and Welsh tunes from the past and present, singer Anna Richardson said.

“I think everyone will really enjoy this music,” Richardson said. “The ancient songs are so different than what you find today, and I think that’s the appeal is that it’s different. It’s music people don’t hear all the time.”

The show begins at 8 p.m. in the Cumming Playhouse.

Songs are performed as a full group, by only women or men and “especially gifted” soloists,” she said.

“The whole point of having a chorus is that we sound like one voice,” she said. “We just have a lot of talented people who together create this really beautiful opportunity.”

The Cumming Playhouse Singers formed in 2006 as a community mixed chorus that calls the town venue home.

The group sings a variety of genres and styles, Richardson said, and always looks forward to “performing for our community.”

Director Van McCollum has selected a variety of music from the Celtic culture for the spring show, including ballads, Irish dance music and traditional tunes.

“The music itself is fun to sing and fun to listen to,” McCollum said. “I think they’ll be tapping their toes to this kind of music. It’s pretty energetic and light.”

The crowd may recognize some of the songs, such as “Irish Eyes are Smiling” or “Danny Boy.”

The choir performed an Irish show last year for St. Patrick’s Day, but expanded to include music from three Celtic nations for this year’s spring performance.

Musicians from North Forsyth High will also accompany the group, and part of the show’s proceeds will support the school band.
